That letter also prompted General Motors to recall close to a million units of 2014 to 2017 model year Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia. The Michigan-based manufacturer weighed in on the discussion by saying the evidence and data by NHTSA do not provide a basis at this time.
A total of 12 vehicle manufacturers are potentially involved in the recall: BMW, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Stellantis, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
NHTSA will continue the public hearing until December 4 before making a decision. This could lead to one of the largest recalls in US history. Another was Takata, a Japanese automatic parts company that agreed to pay $1 billion in fines after filing for bankruptcy due to faulty airbags in 2017.
