Polestar has announced a groundbreaking agreement with Tesla to integrate the newly established North American Charging Standard (NACS), a move set to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) landscape in North America. This collaboration will grant all Polestar drivers across the U.S. and Canada access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. From 2025 onwards, Polestar vehicles sold in North America will come standard with the NACS charging port. In the lead-up to this transformation, adapters are slated for release in mid-2024 to enable existing Polestar drivers to conveniently access the Supercharger network.
Polestar’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, hails the development as a significant victory for North American customers. “We salute the pioneering work Tesla has done to speed up the adoption and increase the popularity of electric vehicles. It’s fantastic to see the Supercharger network being made available in this way,” said Ingenlath. “With 12,000 charging points today, a number that will only keep growing, this move will greatly increase the rate of EV adoption in a key automotive region.”
Furthermore, the agreement covers both current and future Polestar models, ensuring long-term compatibility and accessibility. To keep in sync with the existing Combined Charging System (CCS) public fast charging infrastructure in North America, future NACS-equipped Polestar vehicles will also come equipped with a CCS adapter. This strategic move not only promotes flexibility for Polestar owners but also ensures the continued utilization and relevance of current EV charging networks. The move eliminates a key barrier to EV adoption – charging infrastructure – making the ownership of EVs even more attractive and viable.
