Sometimes, people who are associated with power become too egocentric and do things that can harm others. Recently, a video showing one such incident has gone viral on the internet. In the video, it was noted that a police driver in Kannur, Kerala, was seen hitting a petrol pump employee with his car. What’s more shocking is that he even drove away for nearly a kilometer with the man clinging to the bonnet. It has been reported that the man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Incident at Kerala Petrol Pump
As per the reports, this particular incident occurred on the evening of July 14 at the NKBT petrol pump in Talap, Kannur. The video of this incident has been shared on the internet. What we can see is that there is a white Maruti Suzuki Swift standing at the exit of the petrol pump. We can also observe that an employee of the pump was standing in front of the car.
He was there to stop the car driver from exiting the petrol pump. However, during this, the car driver does not stop, and the petrol pump employee jumps on the bonnet of his car. After this, the driver does not stop the car and continues driving the vehicle.
As per the reports, the main accused in this incident is K. Santhosh Kumar. He is a 50-year-old driver at the district headquarters of the Kannur City police. Reportedly, he asked the petrol pump attendant to fill his car with petrol worth Rs 2,100 but paid only Rs 1,900.
So when Anil, the petrol pump employee, demanded the remaining Rs 200, Kumar attempted to flee without paying. At this point, Anil, in an effort to stop the driver, ended up standing in front of the car at the exit of the pump. However, after repeatedly asking him to pay, the driver did not care, which ended with the employee clinging to the car’s bonnet as Kumar sped away.
It has also been reported that despite Anil’s pleas, Kumar continued driving recklessly until he finally stopped at a nearby police station. In their attempts to save the petrol pump employee from getting injured, other motorists chased the vehicle. They were attempting to stop the vehicle and assist Anil.
Has the Driver Been Arrested?
Following this incident, it has been confirmed by Kannur City Police Commissioner Ajith Kumar that K. Santhosh Kumar has been arrested. He has also been suspended from service, stated the police commissioner. Apart from this, various charges, including attempted murder, have been imposed against him.
It has also been reported that Anil sustained injuries to his hands. He officially lodged a complaint with the Town Police, adding to the legal woes of the accused. C.U. Mujib, Kannur RTO (Enforcement), also stated that the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is preparing to suspend Kumar’s driving license for at least two years.
This is currently pending as they are yet to receive the police FIR and a report from the Motor Vehicles Inspector. During the investigation, it was also found that this is not Kumar’s first offense. Previously, he had driven a police vehicle into a petrol pump, which also caused damages.
