The first of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS generations was the 996 and debuted just before the turn of the century, but it was never officially sold to US customers. The GT3 was only relaunched in 2006 for the 997.1 911, which means there were only two model years of this generation of the Porsche 911 GT3; the RS only appeared in 2007. A special-edition 4.0L version of the GT3 RS would become available for the 997.2 911, and this would become the standard engine from MY2016. The GT3 RS would again take a hiatus, only to reappear for a production year or two before finally coming back for the latest 992-generation 911, now with unequal-length front suspension and a 518-hp engine.

It would be another two years before the Porsche 911 GT3 RS would return in the same mechanical configuration as before, but now with a fractionally lower 518 hp.

The facelifted 991.2 version of the 2019 model-year GT3 RS, with changes similar to the Porsche 911’s regular trims, went on sale after another two-year dry spell. It still used the same high-revving 4.0L flat six-pot and seven-speed PDK auto, but now had 520 hp.

After a two-year hiatus, the refreshed 997.2 911 spawned GT3 and GT3 RS models again, now with a 450-hp 3.8L flat six-pot with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. For the 2011 and 2012 model years, a special-edition GT3 RS 4.0 was made available with 500 hp.

The high-revving naturally aspirated track 911 would only make a return to the market for the 2007-2008 model years, first the Porsche 911 GT3 and then the RS. At this point, it came with a 3.6L flat six-cylinder engine good for 415 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
