5 2024 Honda Prologue

BuzzScore: Unrated

The Honda Prologue is the newest model on this list and our test drive of the car is still in the near future. For that reason, it doesn’t have a BuzzScore yet, so it takes up the first position on our list. We’ll update this list once we have feedback from our test drivers.

As the only purely-electric SUV on the list, the Prologue comes with a claimed 107/91/99 MPGe rating and 296 miles of range on FWD cars. Honda has experimented with some other electric vehicles in the past, but this is the brand’s first attempt to mark its presence against the competition. buyers get two options in terms of powertrain: a 212-hp FWD version or a 288-hp AWD model, with the latter dropping to 281 miles of range. It can also tow up to 1,500 lbs – the same as the far weaker CR-V. With its curb weight at around 5,000 lbs (more on higher trims), the car is heavy, and we’re looking forward to seeing how that affects the drive and handling.

Starting at $47,400, the Prologue is a harder sell compared to most of Honda’s other SUVs. The base Prologue still has cloth seats and not as many features as the price would suggest. If you opt for the Touring trim level, though, you are in store for leather seats and better feeling materials throughout the cabin – but those models surpass the $50k mark. The Elite model costs the most, with a sticker price of $57,900 before options and destination. All trim levels still come standard with safety features like forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist, at least.

4 2024 Honda CR-V

The 2024 Honda CR-V might rank low when compared to other Honda SUVs, but 7.8 out of 10 is a good score to start this list with. This CR-V’s powertrain includes a 1.5 liter turbo-four that makes 190 horsepower and the base trim level puts the power down to the front wheels. While 190 horsepower does not sound like a lot these days, it’s still just enough to get the 3,400-pound-plus curb weight around. With 179 lb-ft of torque, this SUV is rated to tow 1,500 pounds – enough for a small u-haul trailer or perhaps a small boat for those adventurous weekends. The base model CR-V’s fuel economy comes in at a combined 30 mpg, while the hybrid version bumps that number to a combined 40mpg with 2WD. The hybrid’s powertrain puts out 204 hp, but it tows a little less.

Starting at a reasonable $29,500 at the entry point to the range, the CR-V costs a touch more than the Toyota RAV4. However, Honda makes up for the difference with a spacious cargo area and plenty of features that only get better with higher trim levels. The base model comes standard with a seven-inch touchscreen display compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Along with Honda’s regular dependability, the safety standards are high. All trim levels of the 2024 Honda CR-V come standard with the collision mitigation braking system, lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, and front and rear parking sensors. While not a particularly exciting or super stylish SUV, the CR-V will get you where you need to go without a fuss.

3 2024 Honda Passport

The 2024 Honda Passport may have the same BuzzScore rating as the CR-V, but by vrtue of it’s slightly higher specification and larger cabin, we’ll rank it one position higher. It may be smaller than the Pilot, but it has almost as much power and enough practicality to add value to your family life. With the same powertrain as the Pilot, the 3.5 liter V6 produces 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque; the Passport feels capable while passing in traffic and picking up speed to merge. Even though the Passport has usable power, the fuel economy is just average. The EPA estimates fuel economy of 19/24/21 mpg, which is not phenomenal in the grand scheme of things. But the Passport makes up for it in other ways, like its five-star overall safety rating, 80 out of 100 quality and reliability rating, and extensive list of comfort features.

The base model 2024 Honda Passport starts at $41,900 and goes up to almost $48,000 for its highest trim level. All models come standard with all-wheel-drive and are equipped with Honda’s eight-inch touchscreen, tri-zone climate control, and a multi-view rear camera. The Passport has an available Trailsport trim level which includes off-road tuned suspension and smaller wheels to fit all-terrain tires. This SUV can be an engaging experience on mild trails, but performs as expected on the road as well. The 2024 Honda Passport makes a bold statement with its large grill hiding a respectable V6 engine and plenty of space in the roomy interior.

2 2024 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot remains a staple in many American households. With a larger 3.5 liter V6 engine, this SUV has understandably poorer fuel economy than the smaller CR-V; the front-wheel-drive version only manages 19/27/22 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. The trade off is that the Pilot has a potent engine, with 285 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity for the 2WD Pilot is 3,500 pounds, or 5,000 pounds if you opt for the AWD version. Being the largest SUV in the Honda lineup, the Pilot can also seat up to eight people.

Starting at a base MSRP of $37,090 and going all the way up to over $52,480 for the Elite trim level, the Pilot is available as a more budget-focused commuter or a well-kitted out and comfortable cruiser. There’s also an adventure-focused trim called the TrailSport, which comes with a two-inch suspension lift, all-terrain tires, and two skid plates under the body. The ground clearance is still only 8.3 inches, though, so be cautious of any larger divots or rocks in the road. Base model features include tri-zone automatic climate control, a even-inch color touchscreen, a seven-speaker sound system, and all-LED exterior lighting. Overall, the 2024 Pilot is a great SUV that can take the whole family on a road trip in relative comfort.

1 2024 Honda HR-V

The 2024 Honda HR-V is a practical and respectable SUV with classic Honda dependability. The 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine only makes a slow 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. When considering how the size of the HR-V (the FWD version has a curb weight under 3,200 lbs), one might expect better fuel economy than what the HR-V manages – not that 26/32/28 mpg for the FWD version, and 25/30/27 mpg, are bad at all. The HR-V ranks highly for its well-packaged interior and comfortable seating, while also being surprisingly adept in the handling department. It’s not particularly quick or powerful, and the CVT drones when pushes, but it is cheap to run and maintain and it ticks all the boxes for a family runabout. That last bit is underscored by an exceptional safety score, too.

This SUV starts at an affordable $24,600 for the base model. Features are plentiful with a seven-inch touchscreen for the base model and the safety suite is comprehensive. Like other Honda SUVs, the HR-V comes with a collision mitigation braking system, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control, all as standard, with higher trims adding even more. Interior space is surprisingly large for this small SUV with room for up to five people, and a total cargo area of 55.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down.
