When we think of luxury cars like one from the British carmaker Rolls-Royce, we think of class and elegance. So even when these cars break down, we think that they go to the dealership where people work on them with white gloves. However, recently, we came across a video that is totally opposite. In this short video, a Rolls-Royce Ghost Series I with a failed front-left air suspension was seen getting repaired at a local workshop.
“Is it just me, or is it surprising to see a Rolls-Royce being repaired at a local garage? I mean, who takes it to a local garage for repairs? I’m really curious why the owner chose to do that.” pic.twitter.com/MYu6oDaRyj

Rolls-Royce Ghost in a local workshop
This video showing a Rolls-Royce Ghost being worked on in a local garage has been shared on X by Rattan Dhillon on their page. It starts with the owner of the local garage showing the silver-colored Rolls-Royce Ghost Series I with a Himachal Pradesh registration parked at his shop.
He then shows and explains that it has been sent to get its left air suspension fixed. The shop owner elaborates that as the air suspension of this vehicle broke, it completely sagged down at the front left. After this, he shows that they lifted up the car with a jack and removed the fender liner to take out the broken suspension.
Following this, he then shows a brand-new, genuine replacement air suspension and the installation process of it. The shop owner, after the installation of this air suspension, takes it out on the highway. It can be noted that the vehicle was working flawlessly.
Why was this vehicle at a local shop?
Many people who may watch this video will have this question: why did the owner of this multi-crore Rolls-Royce send it to a local workshop instead of the Rolls-Royce dealership? Well, the answer is that air suspension replacement is a very costly job.
Generally, a Rolls-Royce dealership would charge upwards of ₹5–10 lakh to replace all four suspensions. On the other hand, the same can be done by a local shop for a fraction of the price. For this reason, many people, even after spending so much on a luxury vehicle, try to get them repaired locally.
What also happens is that as the used car market of India is evolving, there are a number of these Rolls-Royce models available for sale at nearly 40 percent of their original values. So, a lot of people who just want to own the badge of a Rolls-Royce—or even Bentley and other luxury brands—go the aftermarket route.
For this reason, the buyers of such luxury cars from used car markets cannot afford to pay ₹5–10 lakh at their brand’s respective dealerships. So, they take their vehicles to local shops that have the diagnostic tools and expertise to work on such cars for a fraction of the cost.
Are these local shops reliable?
This question is very subjective because it depends on the specific local shop these vehicles are being taken to. If the shop owner and the technicians working in them are experienced and have the necessary diagnostic tools, then it is not a bad idea to get the same job done for a fraction of the cost of a dealership.
Today, even if the local shops do not know the exact solutions to the problems of such expensive luxury cars, there are a ton of YouTube videos and a number of user guides that help them in repairing such vehicles with precision.
As seen in the video above, these shops also import genuine replacement parts, which is an added bonus. Most dealerships charge high prices for repairs because most of their earnings come from repairs and not sales of new cars.
For this reason, many people prefer to take these cars to their local shops, with whom they have a relationship and know and trust.
Advantages and disadvantages of going to local workshops
Now, although the main advantage of going to a local shop is that the cost of repair is less, it has to be noted that there can be some disadvantages as well. The primary one is that the quality of the job may not be as good as a dealership. Additionally, if improper repairs have been made, it could lead to long-term reliability issues.
Netizens’ reactions
A lot of netizens have even supported the owner of this particular Rolls-Royce for taking his vehicle to the local shop. One of the users on the platform stated, “A normal service of RR is equal to buying a new top model Creta at SC. The owner may not find it worth it when he can get the exact same thing done outside for ₹20–30k.”
Meanwhile, another user stated, “Mechanic might be more knowledgeable than his garage lets off. Just changing a suspension. RR dealership might be further away. Don’t write off small independent mechanics. Sometimes they know more about cars than mechanics at official dealers of the brand.”
