Bollywood actor Salman Khan is undoubtedly one of the biggest superstars in India. He enjoys a massive fan base across the nation and is known to have a very warm bond with his dad. He often attributes his life and success to his dad, the legendary writer Salim Khan. Previously, Salman portrayed his love and life journey with his father in the documentary Angry Young Men. More recently, he took to social media with a few photos of his dad’s first motorcycle- a Triumph Tiger 100.
The carousel has two pictures of him and his dad with the motorcycle that looks great. One of them shows Salim Khan seated on the Tiger while the other had the actor himself on the saddle. The caption reads “Dad’s 1st bike, Triumph Tiger 100,1956″. Fans flooded the post with admiration, celebrating the bond between the superstar and his father.
The motorcycle definitely shows its age but is also vocal about being maintained properly. It is evident that both Salman and Salim have been giving it the attention it deserves. Putting it in pure Bollywood fashion- ” Tiger Zinda hein!”
Triumph Tiger 100
Enthusiasts today might connect the Triumph Tiger to an imposing, powerful, go-anywhere ADV motorcycle. However, the first Tiger- the Tiger 100 was a roadster that could go on ruts and could also do high-speed runs. The 100 in its name, indicated the max speed that could be achieved with it- 100 mph. (Just like how Jaguar XK120 got its name). The production runs were from 1939–1940 and 1946–1973, spread across either side of World War 2. Salim Khan’s motorcycle thus belongs to the post-war period.
In the pre-war era, Triumph found success with the Speed Twin and was looking forward to expanding to more models. They wanted to create a lighter and more powerful motorcycle with the new parallel twin. The Tiger 100 was the result of this exploration. Unlike the Speed Twin, the Tiger 100 ( T100 as was better known) had forged alloy pistons and many other technological advancements in its mechanicals. Plus, it also had a single Amal carburetor and a 360-degree firing interval. Early units had girder forks suspension. ( Remember seeing these recently on the Royal Enfield Flying Flea?)
The bike was unusual, and Triumph decided to give it an unusual market launch. The official launch had a T100 get on an endurance race against a dealer-sourced Speed Twin, in which the duo would cover a total of 2,900 km, riding from John o’ Groats to Land’s End in Cornwall. Further, they would head to the Brooklands circuit for six hours of continuous high-speed riding- maintaining 126.3 km/h. The final lap had the motorcycle do an epic 142.4 km/h.
Soon the war intensified and the German bombers destroyed the Triumph factory, leading to a production halt for the T100. The motorcycle’s series production resumed after the war and continued till 1973.
In 1954, the Tiger 100 got a rear swing arm setup. It was Triumph’s sports bike and stayed competent with tech and mechanicals. In 1960, the model shifted to a single ‘unit’ style. Salman Khan’s dad seems to own the pre-unit motorcycle.
