40 years of Omni

Omni was Maruti’s second product in the Indian market after the launch of the iconic Maruti 800. The boxy-looking van was successful as both a private and a commercial vehicle. It was an iconic van and was in production for almost three decades. Maruti even offered a commercial version of this van specifically meant to transport cargo. The Omni was in production for almost three decades and was finally discontinued due to stricter government safety and emission norms. Even today, there are several well-kept and modified examples of Omni in different parts of the country. Here we have an image where the son has posted an image of his family with their Omni, 40 years apart.

40 years of Omni

The image has been circulating on various social media platforms, including Reddit. The person who posted this image shares four images where he, along with his siblings, is seen growing while their parents are getting old.

The family expanded over the years. The parents even became grandparents. While all these changes were happening in their lives, the only constant was the car. In the first image, we see a red-colored Maruti Omni van.

The same Omni van can be seen in the other three images that followed after the first. It looks like the family bought their first car, an Omni, and they probably bought the car in 1964.

The post mentions that their parents have spent almost 40 years with the Omni. The difference between the first and last images here is around 35 years. This means the car was bought even before the kids were born.

The Maruti Omni in the first image gets a gray-colored cover around the headlamps. In the second image onwards, the headlamps cover is actually looking black instead of gray. This means the owner might have actually got the van repainted or restored to maintain it.

Finding a Maruti Omni, especially in such good condition, is quite difficult these days. The versions that were launched a few years before the discontinuation can still be seen on the road, but finding a 1984 model Omni is difficult.

We have come across several instances where people have actually scrapped or sold their old cars to buy a new one. We really like the way this family thinks. In fact, we feel the Omni is more like a member of the family, and that is probably the reason why they have got their pictures clicked with the car.

Maruti Omni is one of those vans that almost everyone reading this article can associate with. This was once the school van, picnic van, and car that the nearby uncle owned who used to drop you and your family at the railway station. For those who don’t know, the Maruti Omni was powered by the same engine as the Maruti 800.

In terms of design, the van has remained more or less the same. With just cosmetic changes, Maruti managed to retain its customers for 36 years. The Omni was later replaced with the much bigger and spacious Eeco, which is still available in the market for both private and commercial sectors.
