In a bizarre incident, the RTO suspended the license of a person and the vehicle’s RC, after a complaint was registered against a man who attempted a joyride on the top of a car while it was still speeding, on open roads. Videos and photos of these were captured by people from nearby vehicles. Let’s delve into the details…
Man’s Dangerous Cat-Top Joyride
The incident happened in Oonnukal, near Kothamangalam, in Kerala. The video shows a White Mahindra XUV300 speeding through the twisty roads. A man is seen sitting on the top of it, barely holding onto the roof rails, as the vehicle attempts each turn. He is seen swaying and struggling to balance himself, while still enjoying his joyride.
The person’s act is a severe violation of traffic rules. It puts the safety of him and those around him at risk. The video recording also has the audio of those who recorded it. They seem to be making comments on how unsafe the guy on top of the XUV300 was, and that he would soon meet with an accident.
The XUV300 was going no slow either. It is seen making quick sprints and aggressive overtakes in the video. When negotiating curves and turns carrying the speed, you can see the mass shifting and how it becomes slightly unsettled for a fraction of a second. When the vehicle itself is so prone to body roll, the guy on top can hardly be any safe.
Drama Followed
You’ve seen the video recording. It did not end there. The guy attempting joyride soon realised that he was being filmed. Sensing danger, he followed the camera car, stopped them, and asked them to delete the footage. When they disagreed and revealed their intention to take it to the cops, he allegedly tried to manhandle them. Scared for life, the ‘filming people’ rushed to the nearest police station- Oonnukal PS, and raised a complaint. The Mahindra XUV300 had done a flee by then.
Cops React
The cops were quick to react. The case was soon transferred to Kothamangalam Joint RTO along with the visuals. The MVD soon traced the vehicle owner using its registration plate and tried to contact the owner via phone. There was no response from the other end.
The next day, however, they could get through. The owner and the person who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident were summoned by the Joint RTO. Strict actions followed. The driver had his license suspended along with the RC of the vehicle involved. Registered at Paravur, it was on its way back from Munnar, at the time of the incident.
Not A One-Off Incident
People these days are ready to do anything to make reels that go viral. While it is unclear if the guy here had such intentions or not, similar ‘roof sitting’ incidents have been reported previously, where the accused were trying to film reels than merely take joyrides. The government’s reactions to these stunts have so far been praiseworthy.
Previously, a Noida man was fined Rs 28,500 for making reels by sitting on moving car’s roof. The 12-second video had gone viral, landing him the fine, as the act was a violation of traffic rules. In another case, a tourist was arrested in Goa after he chose to sit on a moving Maruti Brezza’s roof. Violation of sections 279, 336 IPC, and Sec 192 of the M.V. Act are usually charged in such cases.
