We know that sales charts in Europe will almost always look different to those here in Australia, but an unexpected model has rocketed to the top of the charts, and beyond in a sense, for sales figures this year in Europe.
With 71,683 units sold in quarter one this year, the Tesla Model Y is the sales leader in Europe by a huge margin. It’s a huge jump up from the next-best selling model, and it makes up most of Tesla’s sales in the region for the January-March period.
With the electric car brand having sold 93,559 cars in Q1, putting it 16th out of all the brands charting in Europe, the Model Y is doing some heavy lifting compared to the Model 3, with 19,621 in Q1.

It is, however, ahead of the second-most popular car in the region by more than 10,000 sales, with the Dacia Sandero having sold 60,202.
In further proof that dual-cab and SUV-hungry Australia is nothing like Europe in terms of sales, most of the top-selling models for the year so far are hatchbacks, like the Peugeot 208 or the Opel (or Vauxhall in the UK) Corsa – basically the Barina for Europe.
In Australia, while the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are popular among the electric car crowd, they don’t quite top the charts.
Tesla held a 3.9 per cent share of the Australian market in Q1, beating brands like Nissan and VW but well behind Toyota’s 15.2 per cent and Mazda’s 9.4.
It sold 10,407 cars in Q1, with only 3,169 of them Model Ys.
