The Light Car Company may have stopped producing the Rocket in 1998, but it was rebooted in an updated form briefly in 2007 by a company called Rocket R&D Limited. This venture appeared short-lived. The real Light Car Company still exists to this day, but is now a specialist classic car workshop keeping the Rocket and other classics in pristine condition.
While the Rocket may seem rudimentary, it embodies core traits that are still present in Gordon Murray’s contemporary offerings. It’s small, at only 138.5 inches long and 63 inches wide, it’s light, and it features a high-revving engine, just like the T.50 and the T.33.
Importantly, it served to put a smile on the driver’s face, something it still does to this day, if Franchitti’s response is anything to go by.
“Dario Franchitti MBE kicked off the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed for GMA in Rocket, a car that took part in the very first FOS 30 years ago. It was early. It was wet. But Dario was a happy man… before, during, and after the run!” said GMA.
