Key Takeaways
- A new Guinness World Record for the longest distance driven by an EV on a single charge was recently set in a Ford Mustang Mach-E.
- The record was set in the UK by a team of drivers who drover for nearly 24 hours.
- Careful driving, perfect weather, and pushing past the point where the battery read empty helped set the record.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E has set a new world record for the longest distance driven by an electric vehicle on a single charge. A team in Great Britain managed to drive 569.64 miles before needing to plug-in and charge. The previous record was held by the autonomous division of Zeekr, a Chinese automaker, which drove 563.97 miles on a single charge in Hangzhou, China.

This time around, the record was set by Webfleet, a British fleet management company owned by Bridgestone tires. To make sure there were no shenanigans during the drive, the charging port door of the Mustang Mach-E was taped shut. The team started their record-breaking drive in Norwich just after midnight. It took them nearly 24 hours to complete a loop across the northern United Kingdom.
Perfect Weather Combined With Precise Driving Technique
The drive took them through Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Cambridgeshire, averaging 6.25 miles per kilowatt-hour. The team included expert drivers in real-world conditions, so nothing was done to make this an easier experience than it would be for the average person. They drove on city streets, highways, and through the countryside and exceeded the vehicle’s stated range. In the US, it has an EPA-estimated range of up to 320 miles, while the WLTP rating measurement used in the UK puts it at 372 miles.

It was a typical drive in some ways, but not in others. The drivers were very careful, being gentle on the throttle to maximize range. The weather was also perfect, which is something that can’t be controlled at all, but worked out to the team’s advantage and further maximized range. The typical Mustang Mach-E driver is probably not going to drive as gently as this crew and shouldn’t expect to get the same impressive range figure.
They Drove Until The Battery Was Out Of Juice And Then Some
While most people don’t drive an electric vehicle, or any vehicle, until it completely runs out of fuel, that’s exactly what these guys did anyway. This was a world record attempt, after all, so even when it looked like there was no juice left, they just kept on driving. That extra little bit was what put them over the edge and let them break the record. For the rest of us, the growing EV infrastructure makes the likelihood of not being able to find a charger less of a concern every day.

They set the record with the Mustang Mach-E Premium Extended Range SUV RWD Auto, which has a 91 kWh battery. It also had 18-inch wheels with Bridgestone low rolling resistance tires to further aid in getting every possible mile of range out of that battery. The exact configuration matters as something like the Mustang Mach-E Rally wouldn’t fare as well.
