In India, we have several workshops and custom body shops that work on expensive and exotic cars. In addition to this, we also have workshops that build replicas of these expensive supercars. We have come across several videos in the past where people build such replicas. Some of them look really cool, while others lack refinement. The Porsche 356 is a vintage Speedster that sells for at least Rs 4 crore in Western countries. We have one of these in India, but it is not what you think it is. It is a replica of the Porsche 356 Speedster built by the Rusty Cashew Garage in Goa.
The video has been shared by The Drivers Hub on their YouTube channel. The first thing you would notice about this replica is that it looks clean and visually appealing. It wouldn’t be wrong to call it a well-executed piece of art. This replica is actually based on a Honda City Type-2 sedan. The workshop made major modifications to the frame of the car to bring the project to life.
They even removed the engine from the front and installed it at the rear, just like an original Porsche 356. It is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine from the City Type-2, mated to an automatic transmission. Due to limited space, the car features double wishbone suspension with pushrod, and the subframe has been redesigned to accommodate the radiator and engine at an angle. This has been placed in such a manner that it ensures optimum airflow.
As mentioned above, the artist behind this project paid attention to the details, and that is reflected in the final product too. The car gets a front fuel filler and clamshell-style front and rear openings, just like the original Porsche 356. The front suspension also includes pushrod suspension, with shock absorbers sourced from the Bajaj Pulsar.
As this is a car that was built by the artist in his garage, it is a work-in-progress project, and there are a few elements that need fine-tuning. However, the exterior of the car is finished, and it looks similar to the original Porsche 356.
If you’re wondering how he managed to get the exterior design right, we have the answer. He used 3D models to ensure that the body panels closely resemble those of the original Porsche 356.
These panels are made of lightweight fiberglass, adding to the overall weight reduction of the car. The wheels on this Porsche 356 Speedster look different from the original, but as we mentioned, this might just be a temporary fix, and the workshop might install original wheels in the future.
The final product looks extremely clean, and we hope to see more videos of this Porsche replica in the future. Modifications are completely illegal in India. While certain modifications like changing the color or adding minor accessories are allowed to a limit, structural modifications are not legal in India.
This car is not road legal, but he can definitely take it to auto shows in a trailer for display. Recently, the Kerala High Court passed a judgment stating that people can legally use plastic glazing on the windshield and windows to protect the cabin from direct sunlight. The front and rear windshields should have 70 percent visibility, while the window glasses should have 50 percent visibility.
