Toyota Considering Hydrogen-Powered Land Cruiser

Toyota executives have expressed an interest in producing a hydrogen-powered version of the Land Cruiser 300 SUV.

Addressing the media at a recent Toyota event, hydrogen factory President Mitsumasa Yamagata said the alternative fuel would work very well in a vehicle like the Land Cruiser, which is often used for towing and hauling. “There are possibilities to adapt [hydrogen engines] into those big vehicles, including Land Cruiser,” said Yamagata in a report from Australia’s Drive.

“This advantage of the technology can be utilized for vehicles including [those used for] towing and loading,” added the Toyota executive. It’s unclear at this stage whether the hydrogen-powered Land Cruiser would employ a hydrogen-powered combustion engine or a fuel-cell setup, as favored by the Mirai.

The Land Cruiser’s chief engineer, Keita Moritsu, has previously said that a fuel cell system would provide fantastic range for long-distance motoring, but drawbacks exist.
