Toyota has taken a step further into electrification with a $1.3 billion investment at its Kentucky plant, bringing its new investments to nearly $10 billion in its flagship plant and $17 billion in manufacturing operations to support its electrification efforts in the US.
The investment will add a new battery pack assembly line to the facility, with batteries being supplied by the automaker’s North Carolina plant currently under construction. In addition, this will support the domestic production of a three-row EV model, referred to as the bZ5X, slated to be Toyota’s first US-assembled EV.
“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to vehicle electrification and further reinvesting in our US operations,” said Kerry Creech, president of the plant.
