Toyota's Ambitions For The New Tacoma Are Insane

One of the highlights of the new Tacoma is the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain that makes 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The closest rival is the Ford Ranger Raptor with 405 hp from a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged mill but has less torque. Just trailing behind are the trucks from General Motors, the Silverado and Canyon, and the Frontier.

Meanwhile, non-hybrid versions generate up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The Japanese automaker offers two transmission options: a standard eight-speed automatic and a six-speed manual.

The non-hybrid Toyota Tacoma units are expected to be released later this year, while the more potent hybridized truck should follow early in 2024. Hopefully, the steep increase in production numbers would pay dividends for the brand.
