We used AI to create our dream Alfa Romeos

It’s remarkable just what artificial intelligence (AI) can come up with.

From ChatGPT writing essays to machine learning being used to help analyse genomic and molecular data, there seems to be no limit to what this technology can achieve.

You can add to that list the ability to generate some pretty sexy Alfa Romeo designs.

In the lead-up to its reveal of a new supercar on August 31, the Italian brand is allowing users to submit a series of prompts to get the AI-generated Alfa of their dreams.

You can view a gallery of AI-generated concepts here, and enter your prompts on the brand’s Instagram account.

As a team, we decided to try our hand at creating our own sets of prompts, which are written on the images below, to see what Alfa’s AI could generate. We each have different tastes, and what we ended up with was quite a variety of concepts.

Jack Quick

I understand Alfa Romeo is set to go all-electric soon, but I wanted the chance to see what a modern-day 4C convertible would look like with this AI-generated concept. I’m quite happy with how it turned out actually!

If I had my time again I think I’d go without the bonnet vents because they ruin the angular and sleek silhouette of this two-door convertible.

I’d also opt for a lighter environment to display the car because I feel like the dark studio doesn’t really do the concept car justice.

I know Alfa Romeo is going electric, and is moving into the world of SUVs at the expense of classic coupes… but this challenge wasn’t about creating a business case.

It was about creating a concept car worthy of the Alfa Romeo legacy, and nothing says Alfa Romeo like an elegant (but purposeful) little racer. In my head, it’s powered by a mid-mounted V6 engine that sings like a Busso.

Why have the photo set in a classic garage? Because that’s always been the safest place for old Italian cars…

I am obviously biased but I like mine the best. Looking at the design of a car especially with all of the new concepts and electric vehicles that are being revealed lately, I have realised my preferred designs are sleek and minimalist.

I also love space inside my cars, in case you didn’t realise – hence I tend to favour SUVs. I love having a place for everything and the convenience of being able to carry what I need to go from work, to the gym and then socialise.

I am a big fan of black cars, and although they show dirt easily it’ll always be my colour choice. I love the appeal of a luxurious and high-tech Italian vehicle to feel bougie as I drive down bayside. A four-door was a must for me – again, you will get bored of me saying this but practicality is my best friend.

Alfa Romeo has produced so many gorgeous vehicles over the years, but there’s one that still stands out to me: the 159 sedan.

There’s something about that intricate yet menacing prow that has always captured my attention, and I always thought the sedan looked leaner and meaner than the related Brera and Spider. What it needed, though, was a rear-wheel drive platform so it didn’t have to have such a long overhang.

The 159’s replacement, the Giulia, got the proportions right but softened the details too much. So I enlisted AI to make a new-generation sedan that had the right mix of elegance and aggression.

It turned out a bit softer than the 159, but it boasts sensuous lines and neat detailing. It would make for a worthy Giulia replacement.

Alfa Romeo is known for designing beautiful cars, and pushing the envelope – I wanted my AI-generated concept to do the same.

I tend to gravitate towards modern takes on classic designs and cues, and that’s what I hoped to achieve with this car. Plus, it has to be green because… it’s me.

What came out of it looks like something of a Giulia mixed with an Italdesign coupe with scissor doors. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but I like it more and more every time I look at it.
