There are many reasons why hydrogen lost the sustainable propulsion race: it’s hard to store and transport safely, infrastructure is lacking, and the technology used in hydrogen fuel cell cars involves rare metals which can be difficult and expensive to obtain. Meanwhile, electric vehicle development is more advanced and the availability of charging infrastructure has made leaps and bounds, making EVs the more popular choice.
