Why do some manufacturers use the word cabriolet for a car that’s a convertible?

The words ‘convertible’ and ‘cabriolet’ mean exactly the same thing – a car with a retractable roof. The term ‘cabriolet’ is mostly used in European countries, while ‘convertible’ is more common in the States. Some automakers have, until recently, kept the designation cabriolet (cabrio for short) for their convertibles – but the meaning is the same.
